Avoid Wrist Pain In Yoga!

Let's talk about the wrists...

This blog is part of a series:

External rotation of the shoulders, if carried all the way down to the wrists, can cause you to roll weight unevenly to the outer hand and wrist (which over time can cause wrist pain).

the weight falling into the outer wrist even causes the inner hand to lift

So what do you do?

Here's the pivotal (pun intended!) piece of information that you need! The forearm -- a special joint called a pivot joint (hehe) -- allows you to move the forearm independently from the upper arm. So, as the upper arm and shoulders move in external rotation, the forearm moves in internal rotation to arrive at neutral! (only to neutral or you will create other problems)

Here the weight is distributed easily between the inner and outer hand!

Teaching Tip:

My favorite cue for helping my students (and myself) distribute the weight evenly is "hug the inner wrists!" Whether you are a teacher or a student, hold that cue in mind next time you practice and see if the weight reposition evenly across the wrist creases!

Enhancing practice through education that elevates.
