Tips for Creating a Successful Home Yoga Practice

Thoughts on Home Practice

Here are some of the challenges of home practice as I see them:

1. Distractions

  • The fact is that the reality of all the things you “need” to do are right there in your face when you practice at home (i.e. meals to make, all the dust you can see when you practice.) so it takes extra special attention to not end practice early to get a head start on you to do list.

  • Also there's your munchkins or fur babies that are interfering or just noisy.

2. Technology

  • you might be keeping your phone by your mat at home even though studio etiquette would prevent that normally.

3. Where to Begin

  •  how do you decide what to focus on? How do you even put a practice together.

4. Lack of Community

  •  it’s not always super fun to practice by yourself, there’s no energy in the room helping you along, or people to greet before and after class

5. Lack of Accountability

  • there’s no one there to call you out if you don’t follow through with practicing as planned or if you skip all the hard stuff or answer text messages.

Things that I Think Help:

1. Take the pressure off…

  • Remember it doesn’t have to look cohesive, be pretty, or even happen in exercise clothes.

2. Set a realistic goal to begin

  • shoot for 10 minutes, not an hour or 75 minutes like your favorite yoga class.

    • If you set a goal you’re able to accomplish you’ll be motivated as opposed to defeated

3. Silence your phone

  • definitely don't keep your phone by your mat

  • TIP: put a timer on your phone and leave it in another room and commit to practicing until the timer rings

4. Find a focus

  • Here are a few ways to focus your practice:

    • body part (i.e. hips, hamstrings, etc.)

    • working up towards a specific pose (doesn't have to be a big impressive pose -- could be just feeling more at ease in pigeon pose)

    • general all-around balanced warm up

5. Let joy be your goal!

  • There's no right or wrong! Move just to feel alive and experience joy.

    • Do poses you know and love or even just play and explore moving in ways that aren't even "poses" (p.s. each time you practice more ideas will come to you.)
