How to Work Through Mental Blocks in Yoga
We’ve all been there. Whether you have been practicing for 6 months or 6 years, there is always a part of practice that seems unattainable. Maybe you can’t hold crow pose, or silence your mind in savasana. Maybe when you get on your mat at home you can’t seem to connect to your body the same way you do in class. It’s frustrating, and maybe you feel discouraged or sad or angry.
The truth is, nobody expects you to have the perfect practice. In a culture so filled with media and perfection, it is hard to not compare your practice to others. But yoga is a practice, not a sport. One of the most important parts of yoga is letting yourself feel and process your emotions. If you let yourself feel the struggles that come with practice, it will be easier to work through them and understand that you do not have to be perfect, you just have to try. No one pose will make you happy, but the practice itself will bring you peace.
One helpful way to work through mental blocks is to manifest how you may complete your goal. While meditating, imagine yourself holding a handstand, or staying still in savasana. Over time, you will begin to have a more positive outlook on your practice, which will free you from the mental block.
Sometimes, the only thing holding you back in your practice is your own brain. Remembering that you can fail and fall and still try again - this is one of the most important aspects of yoga and why it is a lifelong practice.
Enhancing practice through education that elevates.
