Meet your Knees

Let me introduce you to your knee joint.

The knee joint connects the thighs to the lower part of the leg, is the largest joint in the human body and is different from the other hinge joints because it not only allows movement like flexion and extension (back and forth), but also side-to-side movement. (1) Said another way, the primary function of the knee is to hinge at the lower extremity. However, the knee does not only bend back and forth as there are also rotational movements at the knee joint.

There are three important bones that come together at the knee joint:

  1. The tibia (shin bone)

  2. The femur (thigh bone)

  3. The patella (kneecap)

and you might be curious to learn that the two major muscle groups most significantly affected by the knee joint are

  1. The quadriceps muscles - which provide strength and power with knee extension (straightening).

  2. The hamstrings muscles - which allow for strength and power in flexion (bending). (2)

Knees are kinda magical the more you learn about them. Click here for visuals on knees with and without hyperextension.

Enhancing practice through education that elevates.
